Formlabs Clear Cast Resin (Form 4)

A purpose-built resin for investment casting patterns — engineered for extremely low thermal expansion, clean burnout, and reliable accuracy. Pair with latticing software for larger patterns, especially geometries thicker than 3 mm.

Formlabs Clear Cast Resin cartridge
Application: Investment Casting Patterns
Technology: SLA
Best for: Latticed patterns > 3 mm
Clean burnout + antimony-free
Accuracy: within 0.25 mm

Important: For casting success, follow the validated print + wash + post-cure guidance and casting best practices (shell/lattice, drain holes, plugging holes, and foundry burnout) in the manufacturer documentation.

Direct-print investment casting patterns — with low expansion + clean burnout

Clear Cast Resin is designed for investment casting, enabling teams to print patterns in-house for faster iterations and complex geometries without dedicated tooling.

Engineered for extremely low thermal expansion and low ash, it helps produce reliable casting shells with minimal cracking — and leaves minimal residue to contaminate the final cast.

Why Choose Formlabs Clear Cast Resin?

Accessible In-House Pattern Production

Bring pattern production in-house to reduce turnaround time, iterate faster, and avoid tooling for early runs and complex geometries.

Low Thermal Expansion

Designed to help produce reliable casting shells with minimal cracking — especially important for larger, thicker geometries.

Clean Burnout

Low ash and antimony-free chemistry help minimise residue and reduce risk of contaminating the final cast.

Accurate & Versatile

Create accurate patterns within 0.25 mm of the design and cast with any metal or shelling system.

Applications

Clear Cast Resin is intended for investment casting patterns that can be shelled, invested, and cast — enabling fast iteration and complex geometry production without dedicated tooling.

Consider Clear Cast Resin for:

  • Engineering castings and functional metal parts requiring accurate patterns
  • Larger patterns (especially geometries thicker than 3 mm) when paired with latticing software
  • Rapid iteration of cast designs without new tooling

Design tip: Shell/lattice + add drain holes to reduce internal stresses and support reliable burnout for larger parts.

*Note: Properties may vary based on part geometry, orientation, print settings, wash/cure conditions, and foundry burnout/shell system. Use manufacturer documentation for validated guidance.

Workflow Overview

Clear Cast Resin follows a design + print + wash + post-cure workflow, then standard foundry steps. For best results, use compatible equipment and follow the manufacturer documentation.

  • Shell/lattice + drain holes: Prepare the pattern with latticing software (recommended for larger parts > 3 mm) and add drain holes.
  • Slice: Orient, support, and slice in PreForm using the recommended preset.
  • Print: Print the pattern.
  • Wash + post-cure: Wash to remove residual resin, then post-cure per recommended settings.
  • Plug holes: Plug drain holes with wax or cure a small amount of Clear Cast Resin over the opening.
  • Tree + cast: Attach to a casting tree and proceed with shelling/investing and your standard burnout/casting process.

Handling note: 3D-printed patterns can be more brittle than wax patterns — handle with care during finishing, assembly, and treeing.

FAQ

1) What is Clear Cast Resin used for?

Printing patterns for investment casting — to shell/invest and cast metal parts directly from a printed pattern.

2) Do I need latticing for larger parts?

Recommended. Clear Cast Resin is designed to pair with latticing tools for larger geometries, especially parts thicker than 3 mm, to support reliable burnout and reduce shell cracking risk.

3) What documentation should I follow?

Use the Technical Data Sheet and the Investment Casting White Paper for validated processing, post-processing, and casting recommendations.
